Ladies and bright pants

Freshman year of college, I joined a Freshman interest group that had a bunch of people that were all psychology majors and Freshman. You know how everyone always says that high school friends are the friends you drift away from when you start to really grow up, but college is when you find the friends that click? That’s what happened. And today the four of us that are still close went to lunch. We all have our roles; the mother, the smart one, the  one who’s always laughing and the uplifting one. And that’s not to say that we don’t all have our maternal moments, or our smart moments, or our uplifting ones, but we all complete the quad a little bit differently. Whether it’s Yahaira carrying around an entire pizza box for her lunch, me laughing so hard I’m crying because of the conversation I just overheard, Shunny getting lost because she’s talking, and Nereida calmly trying to get us all together, it works. In some crazy way. And maybe that’s what college is for, to teach you how to find the friends that can look at you and know you need to laugh until you cry, or will go pick you up from the housing department because you wandered off. Who keep you down to earth. They provide the laughter and the support, every day.

And if you wear bright pants to girl’s lunches, be prepared for crazy people to come sit with you while you wait for your friends. Like the frat guys who want to give you dating advice, the boy in the Mickey Mouse sweatshirt who will repeatedly wink at you, the guy who will whisper things to you in a language you don’t even know, and the sorority girl who will ask to borrow two chairs for a few minutes, and end up inviting her entire sorority to sit at your table. I warned you.

P.S. If you’re here from Ash’s blog, I’m so excited. WELCOME! SmileStick around.

I am now 10 years out of college (ouch!) but just wanted to encourage you to hold those friends close! My best girl friends and I are still tight even though we live all over (Oregon, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Minnesota, and Illinois) and we have a girls' weekend every year. For the whole weekend we chat, get very little sleep and just enjoy the gift of life-long friendship. It rules and I recommend anyone to do the same. Otherwise, life gets too busy. And it should never be too busy to sit around a table with a mug of coffee with your best friends in the world!
